Published on the occasion of Richter’s 7th exhibition at Marian Goodman Gallery, New York in the winter of 2005. The exhibition included works made between 2001 and 2005, including two important cycles of new paintings, as well as individual paintings, and a series of large-format drawings rare in scale and the first of their kind since the appearance of the 1999 catalogue raisonn of the drawings, Gerhard Richter: Drawings 1964-1999. The two new series of paintings include four Silikat pictures, “885-1– 885-4” (2003) whose black and grey planes explore the nexus between abstraction and representation, taking as their point of departure photographically enlarged molecular structures. A separate cycle of works will include a series of twelve paintings from 2005, “892-1 — 892-12” (2005), in which the artist’s pictorial stratagems are developed within the context of a succession of large-format abstractions. The catalogue includes an essay by Dr. Dieter Schwartz and an essay and interview by Benjamin H.D. Buchloh.
